“Yunno we found a place on the land where we can lay back and watch the ocean roll,.
And we walk in the sand m’lady and me and we watch and see the child grow … “
– PAUL KANTNER, 1971
Greetings all!
It is one of the functions of manager to accurately convey the Artist’s wishes to both “the public”
(i.e the fans), and to those with whom the Artist conducts commerce (i.e. promoters, record labels). I believe 2008 presages a nexus of immense activity and creativity … and to those of you especially, who have been along with us for the long ride, I am very pleased (“well chuffed” as they say across the pond) to share all with you herein.
We now embark upon a new JEFFERSON era in several respects. Subject to the dotting of ‘I’s” and crossing of ‘t’s,’ PAUL KANER continues to be the sole person authorized to perform and record as JEFFERSON STARSHIP for the remainder of his natural or unnatural life. The band he created vis-à-vis “Blows Against The Empire,” in 1971, then embarking on tour for the first time in 1974, recreated for a new generation re-launching 16 years ago today, is made new again.
First, the historic Ledson Hotel shows Feb. 15-17 are SOLD OUT. For those ‘faithful’ who procrastinated … who are now ‘shut out’ – contact me off board immediately as the venue capacity may be expanded by a handful of tickets nightly … so as to preserve the sanity of those who might otherwise have been forced to go without.
The Ledson shows shall be indeed be historic for other reasons. These shall be the last shows performed by DIANA MANGANO as the band’s female lead vocalist. Both DIANA and longtime drummer PRAIRIE PRINCE shall no longer appear with the band. They have not quit … they have not been fired … they are still part of our family, but have asked to be ‘relieved of duty.’ Life is more than JEFFERSON STARSHIP
and DIANA wishes to pursue other interests. She has asked to be placed on ‘sub’ status akin to DARBY GOULD, so it is likely we have not seen the last of DIANA. Those of you who follow us know that PRAIRIE is in demand … not only as a world class drummer with THE TUBES and THE NEW CARS, but also as a commercial Artist and set designer (did you know
that?-www.prairieprince.com). For most of the past two years former JEFFERSON STARSHIP drummer DONNY BALDWIN has handled the drum throne … now DONNY is again given his earned status as the band’s principal drummer. I am confident that we shall have the pleasure of both DIANA and PRAIRIE playing with JEFFERSON STARSHIP at some point in the future.
The Ledson Shows shall present ‘breakouts’ of excavated classic material to be sure … but they shall also showcase some of the material that the band will rehearse for and record in March. We have signed a deal with Fuel 2000 Records distributed by Sony Redline for their custom label Airline Records. JETHRO TULL also records for Fuel 2000 by the way. The label are fans too and they “get us” 100% and are committed to a large budget promoting our first studio record in 12 years. Without giving too much away, those of you who attended last year’s Cannabis Cub and received “songbooks” have a leg-up in figuring out what we are up to. Though not exclusively so – the as yet untitled record (no it won’t be called “Cloverfield”) will present mostly classic era songs of protest and social conscience and perhaps a few new compositions in this vein as well. The record is scheduled for release Sept. 1, just in the time to spice up election season.
Slated to appear on this landmark masterwork are PAUL KANTNER, DAVID
FREIBERG, CHRIS SMITH, MARTY BALIN, SLICK AGUILAR, DARBY GOULD, DIANA
MANGANO, DONNY BALDWIN, PRAIRIE PRINCE and special guests who I cannot yet divulge.
Our new female lead vocalist shall also be prominently featured … and her name is CATHY RICHARDSON. I do not have words sufficient to praise CATHY’s talent … or accomplishments, so I recommend you check out her website: www.cathyrichardson.com and read the press release, below:
January 2008: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!
CATHY RICHARDSON
“Broadway’s Janis Joplin” joins JEFFERSON STARSHIP!
CATHY RICHARDSON has joined JEFFERSON STARSHIP as female lead singer in the legendary band. After Grace Slick’s retirement from music in 1989, Paul Kantner reformed the band he created in 1971 as an offshoot of JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, with Bill Graham managed singer Darby Gould who left following the death of septenarian violinist Papa John
Creach. Diana Mangano took over in 1996 and left amicably at the end of 2007.
Cathy is an award winning music artist, graphic artist, and clothing designer. Her professional credits include fronting her successful rock band, producing and releasing seven albums on her various indie record labels. She was nominated for a GRAMMY Award for Art Direction of her band's 2003 release, “The Road to Bliss.” “The Road to Bliss” also received two DIY Awards (Do It Yourself in Film, Books and Music) for Album Art of the Year and Producer of the Year. Her latest release, “Delusions of Grandeur,” topped the 2007 DIYs when she won both Album and Producer of the Year.
She portrayed Janis Joplin in the original Off Broadway cast of the hit show “Love, Janis” and also in Chicago, Sag Harbor, NY, San Francisco, Phoenix and Tucson, and sings with Janis' original band members, Big Brother and the Holding Co. Also, Cathy is set to launch her new line of hand dyed, organic cotton yoga pants, Shining Shakti
As a top session singer, Richardson has recorded dozens of national commercials for companies like Kraft, McDonald's, Budweiser, Applebee's, Glade and State Farm Insurance. Her voice can be heard in the films Savage, HBO's the Vagina Monologues and Talledega Nights: the Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
On-camera tv credits include a regular spot on Jack's Big Music Show, a rocking music education show for kids on the Noggin Network, produced by Spiffy Pictures. Richardson also narrates and sings on the popular Spiffy-produced DVD series for kids, the Curious Buddies.
We shall be video recording the entire rehearsal/album process as well and are hard at work to be the first band to ever stream video of the whole shebang, so as to share the “process” with the world live as it happens (talk about Reality TV?!) and save millions of bored TV watchers suffering through re-runs during the ongoing writer’s strike to boot. Stay tuned on details about the “vid stream.”
We have also signed an archive deal with Voiceprint UK, commensurate to the much revered “Dick’s Picks” recently retired by our GRATEFUL DEAD brothers. This series shall be called “Mick’s Picks” and kicks off with the release of Volume 1 very soon. I will post release dates shortly. Volume 1 showcases THREE different notable 21st Century performances:
1) BB Kings, NY, NY/ 10-31-2000 (acoustic with MARTY & DIANA)
highlights: “The Bag I’m In,” “JPP McStep B Blues”
2) Substage, Karlsruhe, Germany/ 6-16-2005 (electric with DAVID, DIANA & TOM
CONSTANTEN)
highlights: “Epic #38,” “War Movie” (only show ever where both where performed)
3) BB Kings, NY, NY/ 9-9-2007 (4 mini sets – epic show with MARTY, DAVID, DIANA)
highlights: “Million” breakout
The Webmiester will have the tour dates up by time you read this ( if
you are reading this for the first time-oh yea, the web guy is in
perfect sync-rick). We are close to finalizing negotiations for an historic world tour … working title “1968.” I cannot provide details here … I wish I could … but think good thoughts, because it will be the biggest thing we’ve done since the 1992 re-boot.
To recap: A new record deal, a new archive deal, a new lead singer, a world tour to announce (within a week or so to be hoped) … I thank you all for your kind words and support. I wish you all the best in 2008 … and continue to watch the skies!

APPENDIUM
It goes without saying: The BBs shows have been particularly fun for one and all! Since the first NY "Galactic Reunion" show at Tribeca PAC Feb. 2005, we have brought our little circus to BBs adding COUNTRY JOE, TOM CONSTANTENB, DARBY GOULD, PETER KAUKONENE, QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE and most recently BIG BROTHER & THE HOLDING CO. to kick of "The Summer of Love 40th Anniversary Tour."
Amidst the overwhelming praise for these sell out shows, some of the faithful have echoed a similar 'mild complaint' (not to be confused with the rebuke of our CD fulfillment) ... and that is: "MORE JEFFERSON ... less guests."
You want it ... you got it!
The "JEFFERSON SURREALISTIC STARSHIP OMNIBUS" show will bring FOUR sets of PURE JEFFERSON MUSIC to commemorate FOUR decades.
Set 1) Classic JEFFERSON STARSHIP 1974-78!
Set 2) MARTY BALIN TRIO
Intermission will debut the short film "PAUL KANTNER @ GROUND ZERO" filmed July 3, 2002 ... in "the bathtub" courtesy of New York's Bravest.
Set 3) PAUL KANTNER's "BLOWS AGAINST THE TOLLBOOTH" with some GD & QMS thrown in.
Set 4) "Surrealistic Pillow" in its almost entirety.
Tickets are on sale now and THERE WILL BE SOUNDBOARD GIVEAWAYS, but no formal "meet & greet." Everyone is welcome to hang around and say "Hi" after the show.
Next week, a more comprehensive tour schedule shall be posted.
To pre-empt the naysayers, detractors and gadflys ... it's your time to waste. Seeing as neither HOT TUNA nor JEFFERSON AIRPLANE nor MOSTLY ANYBODY has this type of forum, we are happy to provide an outlet for your misery and I am well chuffed to be a target for your frustration.
I will be in Sausalito, The Park and in NY ... in case any of you naysayers, detractors and gadflys have the stones to confront me personally. The only requirement in NY is: You gotta buy a ticket and watch the show. THEN - if you still think we suck, tell me about it.
Hi,
Haven’t seen your face in a while. How have you been? Do you still
dream? Come back with us.
Hello new one. Sit by the fire and join us. Tell us of your
discoveries and concerns. We will listen.
We know each other. Our hearts took many paths. Again we find
ourselves in an unpopular war, social chaos, an unknown enemy and a
struggle to make it all OK.
Sometimes you can just wink at somebody and they understand.
Jefferson Starship Loves You.
This site is like a big old castle. Secret hallways and grand meeting
places. Please explore every corner.
Most importantly is that you are going to meet some very excellent
people. We have a place where folks correspond with each other like
the Roman Forums of antiquity. There is the A Deck.
The A Deck is a forum where for the most part folks hook up to share
Jefferson Family stories or ask questions of the Band or fans. For
example, you may want to ask what are the chords to a certain song-you
may actually get Paul Kantner telling you what they were. It is
that kind of place. Many Band members post to the A Deck - you get
the latest news and tour updates (plus cool reports from concert
goers) But sometimes folks just have other things on their minds,
so…
The Cornfield is where you will find lots of folks debating,
discussing and sharing topics outside the Jefferson related topics.
It’s, well, corny. There is a funny story on how the Cornfield
happened (probably funny only to webmasters).
The A Deck was being pummeled by trolls (weird people that just are
like online muggers-but even stupider- as they do not get any
compensation). Paul had in mind to create a place to send them to a
sort of purgatory. The idea was that there would no longer be an
audience for their bad behavior but themselves.
Inspired by a Twilight Zone Episode where this (maybe) ten year
old child (Bill Mummy) had these supernatural powers to turn people
and things, into something entirely horrid! Well. not that horrid, he
turned a guy into a Jack in the Box, but it was surprising…but I
guess not all that horrid. Anyway, the witnesses to this child’s
godlike powers told him to wish his really not so horrid creation into
the CORNFIELD! So we thought that the Cornfield would be a good place
to send all the folks who misbehaved.
However, we forgot EVERYONE misbehaves.
So, for all you folks that want
to reach out-here we are. The Cornfield is a great place to meet and
have some fun. The A Deck is a great place to speak with folks and
share information or ask questions that are either Jeffersonian or
about things that may be on the minds of the Band (Did I mention that
Paul Kantner runs the A Deck?) We get rid of the trolls as we can and
the endless SPAM (why do people think it is OK to sell their
pharmaceuticals here?). We want to talk to you. We embrace all ideas
as worthy of discussion and everyone can disagree without loosing a
sense of Community. Discussion - Peace Pipe. Groovy (I still say
that).
This Summer we are going to meet with our old friends, the original
members of Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship, Big Brother and the
Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape,
It’s a Beautiful Day and the effervescent Tom Constanten, former
pianist for the Grateful Dead. What is even better is that we will all
meet again. Some new faces, our children and our children’s children
basking in the sonic rays of wonderful music. This is a family
reunion. Be comfortable and enjoy.
Bring yourselves to the show, if you cannot come, visit everyone here.
While you visit, take the time to poke around. There is music, people,
movies, literature and much, much more. Laugh, cry and get motivated.

"Take me on a
trip upon your magic swirlin' ship,
My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip,
My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels
To be wanderin'.
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way,
I promise to go under it."
- BOB DYLAN
We
couldn't make Amsterdam work out with our busy European schedules. We
could have played Amsterdam, but not with sufficient time on either side
to allow for maximum TRANS-LOVE fan enjoyment. We'll keep trying to dial
it in the future though ~
~ BUT(!), we're gonna 'plan B' you.
"Owsley & Charlie twins of the trade, come to the poet's room
Talking about the prob;ems of a leaf and yes it'll be here soon
There used to be tons of gold & green, comin' up here from ...
***MEXICO***"
You are advised & INVITED to join us for the first annual TRANS-LOVE
MEXICO ~ COMMUNE WITH THE SKY GODS at the fabulous Marriott Casa Magna
Purto Vallarta Resort Oct. 7 & 8, 2005.
For resort info, go here:

Oct. 7 will be an intimate acoustic/ dinner concert ...
Oct. 8 will be full blast/warp engines to maximum electric ...
... outdoors of course!
We plan on arriving a few days early ... we won't be in any rush to
leave either (our next show is NOT until Oct. 14, so we may stick around
for awhile.
These dates will go up on the schedule tomorrow, along with some
intimate "bon yoyage" acoustic shows May 1-3 by various band
members, in advance of our departure for Europe.
Shortly, we'll have links for you to connect with as regards the travel
packages available for the MEXICAN EXPEDITION. Just for smiles though,
feel free to post a "show of hands" below - if you're
interested in joining us.
"Adios amoebas" (from THE FAR SIDE by Gary Larsen) ...
