Check out a book "Corruption and the Decline of Rome," by Ramsay MacMullen... the author blames the decline of the Roman Empire on the privatization of the government... meanwhile we wait for the Enron affair to spin out, while all of the other Enrons start to show up in the newspaper...|
There's also this idea that, as the Roman Empire aged, the army and the bureaucracy became more and more expensive while, in the West, more and more of the wealth was concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer people...
Remember, though, that the Empire in the eastern half survived past the part in the west... so what's the equivalent of _our_ eastern half? San Francisco?
