Make no mistake, Marty Balin remains a great singer.  He may experiment with octave range at inopportune times but he is a great singer.  Attitude?  He's always been friendly, somewhat aloof but cordial.  He knows who he is, what he's done and what he represents, as does PK, jack, Grace, etc.  If i had written Wooden Ships, Miracles, etc., i would be somewhat arrogant as well.  Everyone thinks that writing a song "for the ages" is an easy task.  If that were the case, new bands wouldn't be signed, we would just listen to a myraid of classic tunes like "Yesterday", "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Somebody To Love".
These songs are at a preemium and not everyone can correlate the magic that makes them perpetuate on a yearly basis.
peace
me
