I am not suicidal or trying to promote suicide, but I do believe that euthanasia should be legal for those who truly wish to die, so I was happy to see an article in Friday's newspaper stating that the one legal and least uncomfortable way to voluntarily end one's own life is to stop eating and drinking. The article states that "in the rancorous debate over euthanasia, doctors note one option is always legal: a sane, alert person can simply refuse to eat or drink". It also stated that "almost all the 102 Oregon nurses surveyed said their patients who refused water and food had died 'good deaths' with little pain or suffering, generally within 2 weeks." The article was based on a study which appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, and its authors hesitated to publish it for fear of encouraging suicides.
One of my deepest fears is that I may one day be in so much pain that it's unbearable, and the fact that the government says that physician-assisted suicide is illegal has always angered me. This article was a great relief to me, and I am sharing it with as many people as possible. Sorry if this is depressing, but I think it's a very important thing to know about.
